I'm probably best described as an intellectual late bloomer. I began my undergraduate education at The University of Texas at Austin (Hook 'em!) with the intention of becoming a forensic pathologist. Three years into my biological sciences endeavor, I realized that being a physician was probably not the best career fit. After spending an immensely enjoyable year taking electives in classical civilization I decided to further indulge my Romanophilia by taking a class exploring the origins of the Christian movement (The Rise of Christianity, taught by L. Michael White). I think it was Dr. White's class, coupled with my years of working in the retail industry, that led me into librarianship.
"What?" you may say, "I don't understand how those factors can transfigure a former, wanna-be medical examiner into a librarian."
Look, I'll show you:
retail = excellent customer service
liberal arts + biological sciences = intellectual geekery
intellectual geekery = librarianship
Therefore...
excellent customer service = intellectual geekery = librarianship
So, after a stint in a book store that led me to a stint in a public library that led me to pursue a Master of Science in Information Studies at UT that led me to a stint in a large research library that led me to Austin Community College, I'm going strong on the path towards full-time information superhero-dom. Verily I tell you, I have The Best Job in the World. Every day I learn new things, meet new people, and have loads of fun doing it.
